Vivienne Westwood designs are distinct,
bold and fantastically unique. Now in her seventies, Vivienne Westwood was once
well-known for her foray into punk culture and her famous London Store ‘World’s
End’, which she co-owned with partner Malcolm McLaren.
Her inspiration is still taken largely from
her interest in history – it is as though she becomes fascinated with a period
in popular culture and takes inspiration from those times to create her designs
and select colours and materials. She has drawn vision from periods including
the Middle Ages, the 17th Century and of course the 1980s punk
scene. She has also created a collection
with the Ethical Fashion Programme, creating handmade bags in Nairobi using
recycled materials and using designs crafted by women who are widows, victims
of HIV or AIDS and living in poverty or as single parents.
Her clothing designs have been truly diverse,
from jeans to ball gowns. Yet perhaps her most well-loved items are her handbags; Vivienne
Westwood bags are easily recognisable and have been created in a few key
signature shapes. For example, the Yasmin style is a handbag that can be used
for everyday essentials.
Loved for its functionality as well as its
stylish design, the Yasmin grab bag appears in slightly altered forms in most
of the Vivienne Westwood bag collections. It has a rectangular base so it can
be easily set down without tipping, and usually has two structured short
handles and a zip fastening. This season’s New Exhibition Yasmin leather bag is
available in bold, red tartan with the customary discreet gold-coloured orb on
the front. There is an interior zipped pocket and two compartments to assist
with the organisation of your handbag’s contents.
A larger handbag that is also typical of
Vivienne Westwood’s collections is her tote bag, made with two shoulder straps
for easier carrying, two interior pockets and a zip fastening. The black, soft
leather Babylon Tote is currently available at Harrods.
Another popular style of a Vivienne Westwood
bag is the Chancery handbag. This is a bag that any professional woman would be
proud to be seen holding. A rectangular base (again, which prevents tipping)
and rounded top with zip fastening and short, structured handles, this bag is
made with shiny patent crocodile skin embossed faux leather (100% PVC). The
Vivienne Westwood gold coloured orb logo is much more obvious than on the
Yasmin bag and is central to the design.
There are far more designs stretching over
many collections but these are perhaps three of the most popular right now.
Vivienne Westwood shows no sign of slowing
down in her production of stylish clothing, bags and accessories and all are
highly desirable. Although her collections are very different from each other,
there is never a sense that an ‘old’ Vivienne Westwood bag has gone out of
style – they are all classics and stand the test of time admirably. Harrods
stock a range of Vivienne
Westwood bags and provide full measurement details if you want to buy
online.
